NOTICE: Canadian Wildlife Service - Airboat Waterfowl Banding 2026
The Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS) would like to advise residents that CWS staff will be conducting their annual airboat waterfowl banding program across the Maritimes from early-August through to the end of September 2026.
The airboat is used to actively catch waterfowl at night using large nets and bright lights. Once captured, waterfowl are aged, sexed, banded then released. The Atlantic Region airboat banding program contributes vital information to population monitoring, migration and harvest regulations across North America. In addition to banding, CWS staff will be collecting samples to support a national surveillance program aimed at monitoring the status of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in the region.
The airboat operates in marshes and river systems at night, and produces loud, undulating sounds that can be disturbing to some residents in the area. To limit disturbances, CWS staff have modified operational schedules.
