I was honoured to say a few words about Virgil Hammock being named to 2025 Sackville Arts Wall. Write up below:
Virgil Hammock – Literary Arts
Born in California, Virgil has been a Canadian citizen since 1973. He had a long and successful career as a Fine Arts Professor, teaching at the University of Alberta, the University of Manitoba, and Mount Allison University, where he was the Head of the Fine Arts Department from 1975 until his retirement in 2004.
Virgil began writing art criticism in 1968 when he became the critic for the Edmonton Journal. Since then, he is prolifically published in important Canadian and International Art journals, books, and magazines. He has also been deeply involved in the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), as President of the Canadian section for eight years and eventually Vice-President International of AICA. As an Atlantic Region art critic, Virgil has written many reviews which particularly promote and highlight the work of Maritime artists including Indigenous, francophone, the “up and coming” and the “national treasures.”
In 2009, Virgil began a blog on his reflections on the nature of art, on the essence of beauty, and the importance of the creative act. The blog “Virgil Hammock: Beauty and Art”, can be found at virgilhammock.com, where his essays provide a varied and stimulating introduction to the breadth, depth, and energy of this remarkable writer."

Class of '91 Michael de Adder blocked me on X .. he's not an authentic "liberal" .. he's a phoney guy... for the record Mount Allison University also blocked me on X .. they no longer use the X platform.. and..
Mount Allison University "honoured" him due to his relentless and often silly Trump cartooning..

I appreciate hearing from Virgil.. we went for a coffee together in town at Tim Horton's many years ago to chat.. the only problem was he did all the talking.. that wasn't helpful at all.. for me.

"The past is not obstacle to future..
To The Editor: I am in total agreement with my old friend Herménégilde Chiasson that the university should proceed with the construction of a new fine and performing arts centre. But that is not the issue that I and others question, which is the destruction of the Memorial Library in the process. Of course, a new building will provide new and needed space for teaching and research. The past, however, is not obstacle to the future of Mount Allison students, but should serve as an inspiration to them. Their fellow students who died in two world wars and Korea died so that today's students would have a future and the Memorial Library was built in their honour, so that they would be remembered. Somehow whenever the subject of the Memorial Library is brought up the administration of the university starts talking about a fine and performing arts centre and how wonderful this is for future students without mentioning the cost of forgetting the debt to those students who, now many years ago, died 'in service to King and Country.'

Re-development in the age of 'smart'growth

It wasn't long after the War Memorial Library was removed that this old church shown below on the far side of the university's lands was also removed [the graveyard markers where Mr. Allison the founder of the university's remains are buried] .. 1875-2012 Methodist Church was in the ownership of the United Church until turned over to 'sustainable' developer and preferred builder John Lafford ..  Virgil also tried that 'save the church' with his usual misguided hustle .. Virgil was a long time town councillor until 2012 .. and he would have been well aware of all the 'sustainable development' and 'global governance' green U.N. mantra and the 'plans' by technocrats that have been inflicted on this town such as "Sustainable Sackville" and "Climate Action Plan" -- all this is astroturfed onto an unwitting clueless population by stealthy means and useful willing idiots.. surprisingly though Virgil Hammock seems to appear to be oblivious to the 'Agenda' and as to why old buildings are removed and replaced with new soviet-style boxy ugly 'smartgrowth' for the plebs to live in while the upper income folks enjoy their roomy homes and gardens here...... alas, most savvy computer-using people today with a bit of time on their hands [like me] can google Agenda 21 / Agenda 2030 and put the pieces together.. you know .. those who still have the 'common sense' and 'the plain instincts of the common man' know full well about the UN's huge influence in our lives with their endless social engineering and manipulations .. I always question why the town flies the United Nations flag ..... Virgil Hammock ran for Mayor in 2016 but the "Agenda" has never changed around here over the 12 years I have been observing their shenanigans ... the vocal shrill minority here does not, cannot, and will not be representative of all the voices and should NEVER be regarded as the 'voice of the people' no matter how loudly it is proclaimed to be a democracy... its not ... politics is a 'mug's game' - window dressing - a puppet show -- the real power is always there behind the scenes pulling the strings... nothing is left to chance... ever.

Artivism with global.bem, segmagnetics, com, and Tantramar Skate Park project - at this link:

For now parents will take their children to Moncton or Amherst Nova Scotia for an authentic skatepark concrete experience .. real skateparks make for great towns ... please see "Tantramar Skate Park" blogger only - there is no facebook page at this point since I was 'cancelled and blacklisted in this town' ...  George Baker, a town councillor made Amherst's project happen years ago .. George and I spoke about his project his love of doing things that help the youth to enjoy themselves.. I like George.. I like people who get things done.... skateparks are low maintenance and they provide a lasting venue..a place for youthful energetic souls to play .. visit one sometime and ask those youth what they would do with their time if they didn't have a skatepark .. sit on their gaming stations, play on the computer, watch TV, not socialize with their friends outside ? Sackville would rather run mental health wellness gatherings than address the need for youth to have a place of their own outside to exercise and have fun outside unsupervised .. teenagers don't need to be micromanaged or herded or coddled... I have been advocating for a number of years for this new build project and there won't be any peace for the 'community builders' in this town until the concrete skatepark venue youth project is realized .. by hook or by crook .. #culture #youth #teenagers #energetic #fun and ... "tourism" .. yes sir, that's right Monsieur Kelly-Spurles our tourism manager - a new big concrete youth's skatepark venue would definitely increase the number of town visitors who are looking to spend time here enjoying our new "regional" concrete skatepark venue and eat some food perhaps and hangout after their adventures here.. something to think about eh? I know how hard you work at ignoring me .. I'm so well aware sir... by the way, you suck... as for the rest of the clowns in the town hall you had been given notice to get on with this project but chose to ignore the requests... I have spoken to many people over the years who agree with me... I don't need a committee.

Update:  Virgil's back in 2022 in his 80s and now again running for a Town Councillor spot in Sackville - - one of four available spots here in this upcoming "Town of Tantramar" election... will he get in?  The payday will be higher but the role is still the same --- all puppets in a really bad play -- performance theatre -- Virgil knows this but he persists.  He is 'old skool' I guess.

More here on the 'big picture players' who keep us all in line and in our farm pens or as they are now called around here 'wards'... as in hospital spots... "The Pilgrim's Society" at this link:

I was just listening to a long interview with Bernie Sanders with a friend and we both agree that even he, the most left, of all candidates, can ‘t deal with gun control. Hopeless.

Demian Hammock -- Sackville NB -- University Town Talk

Never dull... an epic online commentary from last year by local - Demian Hammock pictured here with his Dad Virgil Hammock at their favourite coffee shop hangout "Black Duck Inn"  ... these two are well known vocal locals.

"Demian Hammock says:
Declining Enrollments at Mount Allison University.
Why Liberal Arts Universities in Canada like Mount Allison University have Now Passed the Point of No Return.
Mount Allison University and the majority of universities have gotten wrong and what they don’t understand. Or perhaps in just plain old denial.
Pumping out too many Liberal Arts Degrees.
Liberal arts universities pumping out too many degrees in the wrong areas, sometimes this is referred to as the
‘College Bubble’
“while college tuition payments are rising, the supply of college graduates in many fields of study is exceeding the demand for their skills, which aggravates graduate unemployment and underemployment, which in turn increases the burden of student loan defaults on financial institutions and taxpayers.” Wikipedia as result, liberal arts degrees hold no real value.
Canada and Undergrads e.g. Liberal Arts Degrees Economic Value a Ticket to Poverty?
“We are number one when it comes to university and college enrollments, but we are also number one in the number of people with university degrees that live in poverty,” said Benjamin Tal, deputy chief economist with CIBC World Markets.
Liberal Arts Degrees not Valued by Employers.
“One survey question asked hiring managers what degrees they preferred. Only 1.6% said liberal arts. “Forbes New Study Is No Degree Better Than A Liberal Arts Degree?
Liberal Arts Degrees Skipping the Basics.
No more core curriculum at liberal arts universities for the most part. Every university in the liberals arts should have a ‘Foundation Year’. Liberals arts degrees are nothing more than a hodgepodge of useless microaggressions served up buffet style these days.
Universities/Liberal Arts Programmes Not Acknowledging New Models of Education & Disruptive Innovation.
Universities now no longer have Proprietary Ownership of knowledge & Distribution. Big problems.
The internet/massive open online course Massive Open Online Course (MOOC’s) are just a buffet of information. Well so is a liberals art degree at this point as well. Except for an internet connection and MOOC’s lot cheaper than the cost of a liberal arts degree.
MOOC’s are an example of Disruptive Innovation: “is an innovation that creates a new market and value network and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network, displacing established market-leading firms, products, and alliances.” Wikipedia
To be fair MOOC’s with the help with places like Google and best of the best universities in the World like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are starting to get good really really good in their consistency and great price points also open 24/7. So Canadian History #101 brought to by Google University which is basically already here will be far more valued. Let’s face it if one gets a History degree from MTA and from the University of Saskatchewan it is all over the map. Universities for the more part have totally gotten rid of core curriculum standards e.g. core readings altogether. BIG MISTAKE. But Google GETS IT!
Brick and mortar universities are simply too expensive vs. online education degrees, especially liberal arts degrees where one does not need for example a lab .This also beats the crap out having to move somewhere else and be in a cramped classroom.
Career Services at University are a JOKE & Out Dated !
If your university does not make Career Services, Internships as part of their core budget and is not part of their main mission statement. Find a university that does! Career Services not part of MTA core budget.
Only 17 percent of recent graduates say career centers are ‘very helpful.
“Recent college graduates were more likely than those in prior decades to visit a career center while in college but are less likely to view their interactions as “very helpful,” according to the newest data from an annual Gallup-Purdue University study of college graduates.” Looking for Career Help, Inside Higher Ed
The Best People not being Hired also a Big Problem at Universities e.g. Collective Agreements.
‘Collective Agreements’ and how they work and why the best people many times do not get the position they deserve. This means a lot of times people get promoted even though it not in the public best interest. Though it is the public paying for these salaries. There no such thing as Collective Agreement online, meaning the student shop around for the best course and degrees taught by the best people in that field.
Atlantic Canada also has way too many duplications of programmes for an area with such a small population.
A New Generation at Universities.
The new generation going to universities now is Generation Z.
Generation Z is the new generation and has replaced Millennials as students in universities.
Generation Z born are Generation Z (1995–2009) very different than Millennials they are perfectly fine with credits and degrees online. They grow up their entire lives with the internet.
Every generation before has seen the traditional liberal arts degree as means of upward mobility except for this new generation, Generation Z.
Generation Z prefer – On-Demand Learning/Apprenticeships vs Formally Educated methods.
Universities are Closed Minded.
Universities are now one of the most Closed Minded places in the Country.
Universities and Safe Spaces/Trigger Warnings.
Safe Spaces. ” a place (as on a college campus) intended to be free of bias, conflict, criticism, or potentially threatening actions, ideas, or conversations” Merriam-Webster
Trigger Warnings”a statement at the start of a piece of writing, video, etc., alerting the reader or viewer to the fact that it contains potentially distressing material (often used to introduce a description of such content).”Dictionary Online
The concept of Safe Spaces is to protect students from ideas they might find offensive. The whole idea of going to university is the opposite it about hearing idea’s that you might find upsetting and challenges you. It’s not about living in an ‘Echo Chamber’.
Why Space Spaces & Trigger Warnings are a Bad Ideas.
“John Ellison, Dean of Students at the University of Chicago, wrote a letter to incoming students. In this letter he states, “we do not support so-called trigger warnings, we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial and we do not condone the creation of intellectual safe spaces where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own.” This view is also shared by Pres. Obama.
What are Safe Spaces & How are Campuses Using Them? Campus Answer
Student Debt is Not Worth it for Liberal Arts Degree Now.
The debt load people with degrees do make more than those who don’t. Though it depends on the degree. What happens in a lot of cases someone gets liberal arts degree can’t get a job and pay off the student loan at the same time then they decide to upgrade their education to something completely different than their liberal arts degree maybe something like healthcare and that point they get a better job. Though in fact did not need undergrad at all to take their upgrade. The only their undergrad did is ruin their credit and make it impossible to buy a house and car etc… It, in fact, that liberals arts degree did the complete opposite of what a liberal arts degree did in the past and that is upward mobility.
Let’s Go Over the List Why Liberal Arts Degree and Four Year Programme is Now a Thing of the Past.
The Liberal Arts Degree List !
Liberal Arts Degree, Gone – Core Knowledge.
Liberal Arts Degree, Gone – Upward Mobility.
Liberal Arts Degree, Gone – Liberal Arts Degrees no longer being viewed as Unique too many being Pumped Out.
Liberal Arts Degree, Gone – Being open to new Ideas e.g. Safe Spaces & Trigger Warnings.
Liberal Arts Degre, Gone – No more Proprietary Ownership and Dispersion of Knowledge. Online Education MOOC’s etc…
Liberal Arts Degree, Gone – No Perceived Value, especially by Generation Z and now the general public and employers. Now that the public has decided Liberal Arts Degree has No Perceived Value the End is Already Here and Everyone Knows It !!!
For Mount Allison University to survive the College/Univesity Bubble in the near future, it will probably have to be amalgamated with a bigger post-secondary institution to survive. Welcome to Mount Allison the campus of university X.
