PM Trudeau Announces Measures in Response to Election Interference
On Parliament Hill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announces a series of measures aimed at addressing alleged foreign interference in Canada's federal elections. He will appoint an independent special rapporteur who will have a wide mandate to make expert recommendations on combatting election interference. The rapporteur could recommend holding a formal inquiry. The announcement comes amid calls from the opposition parties for an public inquiry. Trudeau has also asked the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP) and the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency (NSIRA) to investigate foreign interference. The prime minister is joined by ministers Mélanie Joly (foreign affairs), Dominic LeBlanc (intergovernmental affairs, infrastructure and communities), Marco Mendicino (public safety), and Pablo Rodriguez (Canadian heritage). Other measures include launching public consultations on creating a foreign influence transparency registry. (March 6, 2023) (no interpretation)
