On April 3rd, 2023 we had Horizon Health Network representatives and the Rural Health Action Group give a presentation to council, staff and the public at Town Hall.
John Higham from the RHAG gave a very brief timeline of the events from the possible closure of the Sackville Memorial Hospital pre-pandemic leading up to where the group and our community is today. Interim CEO Margaret Melanson talked about the completion of the tasks from healthcare 1.0 that have taken place at the SMH that has achieved so much for our region. Both John and Margaret spoke incredibly well, with passion and commitment to ongoing work in the healthcare network and its impact on Tantramar and the surrounding area. Dr. Suzanne Johnston, the Trustee for Horizon Health joined in virtually to support and reinforce the need for a community engagement governance structure.
Margaret then broadly went through the next steps needed to move to healthcare 2.0 and touched on the 6 points of focus going forward: prioritizing addiction and mental health resources, improving access to primary care, enhancing existing team-based practices, enhancing prevention/wellness/education, improving transportation and improving long term care.....all while continuing to strive for full 24/7 ER services at the SMH.
There is a lot of work to be done on these big pieces of the puzzle but the commitment, the level of expertise, the desire for collaboration and the excitement could be felt in the room yesterday.
Thank you to the members of the Horizon Health Network, the Rural Health Action Group, the Memramcook-Tantramar Community Task Force, and representatives from Memramcook and Strait Shores councils for attending and most importantly updating the public on the future of healthcare in Tantramar."
