Shit Brainwashed Megan of McGill says...
Today, March 31st is the International Trans Day of Visibility, an annual event dedicated to celebrating trans people and raising awareness of discrimination faced by transgender people worldwide. Today is also about recognizing that many trans people must choose between being themselves and being safe. We must bring awareness to the discrimination and barriers faced by transgender people here in New Brunswick too.
Today, and every day, we must commit to supporting and protecting the transgender community.
Over the last few years, I advocated for Clinic 554 and fought against its closure due to a lack of funding. I've also advocated for making gender-neutral and preferred gendered markers on government forms.
In the coming years, I am committed to advocating for:
- Medical coverage that is accessible, funded, and 2SLGBTQIA+ informed. This includes coverage for gender-affirming procedures, HIV/AIDS medicine, therapy, and other trans-inclusive treatments.
- Education, not only for students but also for our communities to be more inclusive, understanding, and aware of 2SLGBTQIA+ identities, orientations, and experiences.
- Using a gender transformative approach in policies across the province to reduce and eradicate gendered disparities.
If you need support, Trans Lifeline is a trans-led organization that connects trans people to the community, support, and resources they need to survive and thrive. You can access Trans Lifeline here: https://translifeline.org/ or by calling (877) 330-6366"
