In 2014, the city of Isfahan in Iran experienced a series of brutal and horrifying acid attacks targeting multiple women. These attacks, classified as a form of physical violence, involve perpetrators throwing acid at their victims, deliberately aiming for their faces to cause disfigurement. The prevalence of acid attacks has been on the rise in the Middle East and India in recent years, often involving male assailants targeting former partners.
Isfahan witnessed a total of eight acid attacks in 2014, with speculation pointing to two masked males on a motorbike as the likely culprits. Despite extensive investigations, the identity of these individuals remains unknown, evading justice for their heinous crimes.
Debates surround the motivations behind these attacks. Some Iranians speculate that they were a response to the progress of women in Iran, particularly those driving cars or not conforming to traditional Islamic dress. Other theories suggest the involvement of radical Islamic extremists or hardline misogynists.
Among the victims is Marziyeh Ebrahim, who suffered severe injuries in one of the acid attacks. Remarkably, Ebrahim refused to let her scars define her; instead, she emerged as a resilient figure. Today, she is an influential political activist advocating tirelessly for women's rights and raising awareness about acid attacks. Ebrahim is widely recognized as one of Iran's strongest activists, and her efforts played a significant role in the passage of a law in 2019 that criminalized acid attacks.
