As the pandemic took hold of our country, nine remarkable Canadian infectious disease doctors stepped into the national spotlight to guide the nation through its worst medical crisis in a century.
𝗜𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, co-host of CBC’s flagship program The National, spent time interviewing these doctors and capturing their stories in his new book, 𝘗𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵.
Come to a conversation between journalists 𝗜𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 and 𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗿𝘆𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 on what it meant for these doctors to take a very public role during this crisis, the lessons learned, and their concerns about the next pandemic.
𝗜𝗮𝗻 𝗛𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 hosts CBC’s The National from Vancouver, and is one of Canada’s most recognized broadcast journalists. He was born in Trinidad, raised in New Brunswick, and started his journalism career in Nova Scotia, then went to Toronto, and is now in Vancouver. He has hosted a wide range of programs, and his reporting won the Canadian Journalism Award in 2014, a Canadian Screen Award in 2015, and a 2016 Canadian Screen Award for Best National News Anchor.
𝗞𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗿𝘆𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝘁𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 is associate professor at UBC’s School of Journalism, Writing, and Media, and award-winning public broadcaster with the CBC. She is a key member of the Global Reporting Centre, and a Killam Teaching Prize winner. In 2018, she was named as one of North America’s top innovative journalism educators.
