Apr 27, 2025 This week is a special one for us out here on the island. Kelly’s little brother and sister made the long 33-hour drive all the way from Virginia to come visit—and they didn’t come empty-handed. They brought along Kelly’s old hound dog, Blue Bell, who will be staying with us on the island once they head back home.
We start off by heading out across the water aboard the Cape Millie, making our way to where I had my old chainsaw mill set up. The plan is to take it down and bring it back to St. Joseph’s so we can set it up near the house. While we're out there, Kelly cooks up a lunch right on the beach—simple, hot food over a fire before steaming back home.
Once we’re back home, Kelly’s brother helps me unload the sawmill and haul it up to the new spot where it’ll be set up for the season. With the mill in place, I start clearing out the area, getting it ready for all the lumber work ahead.
After that, we shift gears into some heavy work around the house, pulling up big rocks and boulders to start laying out a proper trail. The plan is to create a path that runs from the house, past the animal pens, and down toward the future sawmill and garden area. We borrow Gord’s old digger rig to move the worst of the rocks, and with a lot of help from Kelly and her brother and sister—using picks, shovels, and a lot of elbow grease—we manage to carve out a nice trail that’s going to make life a lot easier going forward.
We finish off the episode with a sit-down Q&A over a cup of tea, answering a few more of your questions about life out here and what’s coming next.
Thanks for following along with us—every step brings us a little closer to the life we’re building out here, one trail and one project at a time.
