Harvesting Winter Firewood by Boat – Off-Grid Prep for Colder Days - Skote Outdoors Newfoundland
Jun 1, 2025
This week, we pack up the Cape Millie and head off the island in search of firewood for the winter. Birch is one of the hottest burning woods around here, and if we want to stay warm and comfortable through the colder months, we’re going to need a lot more than we had last year.
We anchor off and set up a little camp on shore, using Millie as a base and the small boat to move wood from the shoreline back to her. It’s a good system — slow but steady. After a long day hauling, we get a fire going and Kelly cooks us supper right there on the beach.
The next morning, the black flies are out in full force, and we have to get a little creative to avoid getting eaten alive. After one more run for wood, we head home and switch gears to something new: turning an old trampoline into a chicken tractor. We get it all fixed up, and the hens are loving their new space.
We finish the week with some chores around the homestead — feeding and watering the pigs, goats, and sheep — before wrapping up with a sit-down Q&A at the kitchen table.
Thanks for being here — we’re glad to have you with us for another week on the island.
