In this segment from today's "The Ben Mulroney Show", Ben discusses the ongoing trade challenges Canada faces dealing with the United States as a trade partner.
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order last Thursday that will raise his tariffs on Canada to 35 per cent. The White House said Trump was raising the tariff rate because Canada “has failed to cooperate in curbing the ongoing flood of fentanyl and other illicit drugs” into the U.S., as well as Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on American goods.
Canada’s minister responsible for Canada-U.S. trade says conversations with American officials over steep tariffs remain “constructive,” but a resolution is still out of reach.
Appearing on Face the Nation Sunday, Dominic LeBlanc said Ottawa is hoping for progress in discussions on the 50 per cent tariff the U.S. has placed on Canadian aluminum; a move he said is backfiring on both economies.
In our conversation today, Ben acknowledges PM Carney and the Liberal Party's experience in dealing with Trump, while also critiquing the recent diplomatic move to recognize a Palestinian state and its potential impact on trade relations. Ben shares his frustration over the lack of progress in negotiations and questions the strategic decisions being made by the current Liberal government.
