"The operators of a summer camp where an alleged sexual assault of a minor took place this summer “took immediate action” upon learning of the allegation, according to a statement from the owner of the camp, the United Church of Canada.
Executive minister Rev. Faith March-MacCuish said the church was “deeply concerned” by the report of an alleged assault at Camp Ta-Wa-Si, which is an independently operated ministry owned by the church.
“We understand that, upon learning of the investigation, Camp Ta-Wa-Si took immediate action,” wrote March-MacCuish, including firing the employee at the centre of the allegation and reporting the matter to appropriate authorities.
The New Brunswick RCMP said its Sackville detachment received a report on Aug. 24 of a sexual assault against a youth by a cook at a summer camp in Johnston Point, where Camp Ta-Wa-Si is located, about 70 kilometres east of Moncton.
Police said they arrested 46-year-old Jennifer Colleen Abbott on Sept. 8. She was later charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and indecent exposure to a person under 16.
None of the allegations have been tested in court.
Abbott was released with conditions and is scheduled to return to provincial court on Oct. 7.
“We support the camp’s full cooperation with the ongoing investigation by the RCMP and the New Brunswick Department of Social Development,” wrote March-MacCuish.
“Incidents involving the alleged harm of a child or youth are taken with the utmost seriousness.”
“Our care and concern are with the young person involved and their family.”
The New Brunswick RCMP said its sexual violence investigative Unit has taken over the investigation.
The school’s website lists a Jennifer Abbott employed there as an educational assistant.
The Anglophone East School District sent a statement to families of Port Elgin Regional and Tantramar Regional High schools. It said the person referred to in an RCMP news release “has not been at work since the time of their arrest.”
The statement also specifies that all district employees are required to complete criminal record and vulnerable sector checks.
Ouellette encouraged anyone with information to contact local police.
Now that “we've had a courageous individual come forward,” said Ouellette, he’s hoping others will do the same.
“Maybe they were a witness, or maybe they know of someone who was a victim, or even the victims themselves."

The New Brunswick RCMP has arrested a 46-year-old woman from Little Shemogue, N.B., and charges have been laid following a sexual assault investigation involving a youth, in Johnston Point, N.B. Police are now seeking other possible victims.
On August 24, 2026, members of the Sackville RCMP received a report of a sexual assault involving a youth that occurred by a cook at a summer camp in Johnston Point, near Shemogue.
On September 8, 2026, a 46-year-old woman was arrested without incident at a school in Port Elgin in connection with the investigation. On September 9, 2026,46-year-old Jennifer Collen Abbott appeared in Moncton Provincial Court and was charged with:
Sexual assault
Sexual interference
Indecent exposure to a person who is under the age of 16 years
She was later released on conditions and is scheduled to reappear in Moncton Provincial Court on October 7, 2026.
Police are now investigating if the same woman may have committed similar offences against other youths, and the New Brunswick RCMP’s Sexual Violence Investigative Unit (SVIU) has since taken carriage of the investigation.
"This is an active investigation, and we are actively working to identify any possible, additional victims," says Cpl. Hans Ouellette with the New Brunswick RCMP. "We want to ensure that individuals are aware that a sexual assault complaint can be made at any time.”
The New Brunswick RCMP Sexual Violence Investigative Unit focuses on the most severe and complex cases of sexual violence and commercial sex trafficking.
Investigators are specially trained in trauma-informed and survivor-centered approaches and are dedicated to strengthening investigations, supporting survivors, and enhancing community safety.
