At a news conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc outlines the federal government’s response to the final report of the Public Order Emergency Commission. He says the government will consult with provinces, Indigenous groups, and other stakeholders on possible changes to the Emergencies Act based on 22 related recommendations contained within the report. In his February 2023 report, Commissioner Paul Rouleau called on the government to respond publicly within one year to the commission’s recommendations. Justice Rouleau’s inquiry examined the federal government’s February 2022 invocation of the Emergencies Act as part of an effort to clear convoy protests from downtown Ottawa and from a number of Canada–U.S. border crossings.
