"Dalhousie University has begun construction on its first new student residence in more than a decade, with the school saying it has a role to play in helping the local housing crisis.
But the university’s faculty association says the multimillion-dollar project in Halifax does not make sense at a time when the school faces financial issues.
The new L-shaped six-storey building located behind the Dalhousie Arts Centre will house about 213 students in apartment-style units ranging from one to three bedrooms, featuring kitchens and in-suite laundry.
The building is aimed at upper-year undergrad or graduate students, who have said through recent surveys they are looking for this type of housing rather than dorm living."
