UBC - Students for Freedom of Expression - Canada - Campus - Advocacy
Hello everyone,
Unfortunately, UBC has chosen to give in to pressure from the LGBTQ+ community, as well as other anti-free speech groups on campus, and charge us a $400 “Security Fee” for our first event, as well as any additional quantity up to the date of the event, depending on the circumstances.
Not only this, but the Board of Governors has put our second and third events on hold until September 12th, this coming Thursday, when they will begin the discussion to change booking policy so as to not have any more controversial events on campus.
We will be in that meeting in a joint delegation with Jenn Smith, who has also been affected by security fees on his last event here. If you are a UBC student and would like to participate in the meeting, please message us.
The UBC administration has repeatedly stated to us that it values Academic Freedom, and yet it keeps punishing us for the actions of violent outsiders. It does not matter that we are not an AMS club. We are all UBC students and anyone we invite must be allowed to share any idea, no matter how unpopular or even abhorrent.
Cheers,
UBC Students for Freedom of Expression
