The McLuhan Institute - Facebook and Website - Interview with Andrew McLuhan on Devising a Strategy of Survival Using the 4 Laws of Media

This year marks 50 years since Eric and Marshall McLuhan set out to discover if there are any ‘Laws of Media,’ that is, technologies do a lot of things but are there any things that all technologies do without exception?

They ended up finding four — no more, no less — and phrased them as a set of questions to be asked of any human innovation whatsoever:

What does it ehance, or extend, or intensify?

What does it retrieve, or bring back in a new form?

What does it obsolesce, or take over from, push aside?

When pushed, what does it flip or reverse into?

There’s more: the four parts have a proportion or harmony or complementarity among them that can also be very revealing once you have some answers, or help you find more answers if you’re missing some.

Several years ago I noticed that there are four laws, and four suits in a deck of cards… and that’s where the idea started to make a deck of playing cards as a teaching tool to show what the tetrad can do.

It’s a bit of a long story, how I got from idea to prototype, with much help along the way. I have someone working to take this prototype and make it publishable— and then I’ll tell all!

“All a teacher can ever do is get other people to think…
A good teacher is one who can encourage others to think actively. A superior teacher can make the thinking pleasant for the learners, delightful even when it is disturbing and exhausting. By these criteria, Marshall McLuhan was a superb teacher who could stir people’s minds. Even those who found themselves baffled or exasperated generally found themselves changed.”
