Across Canada, communities are feeling the strain of a tight housing market. Addressing this challenge requires new ways of thinking. We need to build homes faster, smarter and more efficiently, while preparing the next generation of talent to lead that work. That’s why I’m proud of two important developments at the University of New Brunswick that together demonstrate how industry, government and universities can work together to drive real impact. Yesterday, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada and Minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, announced federal support for 28 projects modernizing how homes are built across Atlantic Canada. Through ACOA - APECA, nearly $13 million is being invested to help builders, suppliers and trades adopt modern construction approaches such as modular and prefabricated building. As part of this announcement, UNB Off-site Construction Research Centre received $1.8 million to support construction‑related small and medium‑sized enterprises as they test new building techniques, adopt off‑site construction methods and improve productivity. Building off the $2.5 million announced with OSCO Construction Group in the fall of 2025, this work directly supports the goals of Build Canada Homes and helps address housing supply challenges where capacity must grow. At the same time, we’re strengthening the future workforce needed to deliver these solutions. Through a generous Siemens Academic Software Grant, UNB students and researchers now have access to world‑leading, industry‑grade design, simulation and industrial AI tools through Siemens’ Global Academic and Future Workforce program. The OCRC will leverage the industry‑grade Siemens software tools to carry out their work. These advanced digital design, simulation and digital twin technologies will enable SMEs to model, test and optimize construction solutions in a virtual environment before they are deployed on site. Reducing risk, increasing efficiency and accelerating innovation. UNB has always been a place where innovation thrives. By aligning applied research, advanced digital tools and strong partnerships with industry and government, we are helping tackle some of the country’s most pressing challenges and preparing graduates to lead the future of engineering, construction, AI and more.
