The selection process for medical school admission is eroding. The quality of education once you are in is eroding as well.  Part of the reason for this is a focus on "social justice" at the expense of actual useful medical knowledge. Many of us have seen this happening for years, and have tried to call it out. We were pooh-poohed. Now the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada has said the quiet part out loud.  This is happening, and you should be afraid. Very afraid. Julie explains it well in this Substack.

The walls of free speech have been closing in on physicians for at least 2 decades. More and more we are told to blindly follow guidelines and directives in lieu of individual patient care and shared decision-making. Our medical regulatory colleges have demanded that we shut our mouths if we have any doubts about the public health response to COVID. Physicians who think that rushing a child who suddenly identifies as trans towards surgery and hormone treatments are told that their view is not acceptable. From "harm reduction", to abortion, to transgenderism, and COVID policy, many topics have become verboten to discuss - unless of course one is wholeheartedly on one side of the political spectrum, in which case they can safely proclaim their views loudly and publicly. Physicians with moderate views, or god forbid on the right, speak only in hushed whispers in backrooms and in anonymous chat groups with pseudonyms. This is NOT good for medicine and science. What if physicians were not allowed to criticize wanton opioid prescribing pushed by Big Pharma in the 90's? What if we were not allowed to suggest that thalidomide was causing problems in babies? Progress towards the truth is dependent on argumentation. This is not a "fringe" movement. Many physicians and scientists feel this way. The fact that few are heard is a function of fear and self-censorship, as well as media bias. My wife Julie Curwin and I have started a new initiative. SPEECH FORBIDDEN, EVIDENCE FORBIDDEN, LEGAL DEFENCE FORBIDDEN: THE REALITY OF FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
On 24 November 2012, dissident German lawyer Sylvia Stolz appeared at the eighth annual meeting of the "Anti-Censorship Coalition" [Anti-Zensur-Koalition (AZK)] in Chur, Switzerland, where she presented a speech entitled "Speech Forbidden, Evidence Forbidden, Legal Defence Forbidden: The Reality of Freedom of Expression" (Sprechverbot, Beweisverbot, Verteidigungsverbot: Die Wirklichkeit der Meinungsfreiheit).

In the speech, Stolz discusses her experiences as a defence lawyer for so-called Holocaust deniers in Germany, and describes the Orwellian system of state-enforced repression there which denies defendants (and their lawyers!) the right to explain themselves under threat of additional charges for the "repeat offence" of expressing a forbidden idea, even in their own defence in a court of law. Stolz further relates how the subject of the Holocaust itself has never been clearly or adequately defined by the German courts through the normal channel of judicial findings-of-fact in precedent decisions. Instead, the courts have relied on the arbitrary doctrine that the facts of the Holocaust are "self-evident" and thus in no need of proof, despite the obvious objection that the arguments of the "deniers" themselves clearly demonstrate that those facts are indeed contestable and thus cannot be "self-evident" by definition.

In the face of such abuses and absurdities, other lawyers might throw up their hands and simply walk away: Sylvia Stolz has the courage to call injustice what it is, and take a stand. Her speech is an extraordinary document of our times, a deeply moving call "to think what is true, to feel what is beautiful, and to want what is good." Wherever you may fall along the ideological spectrum, if you believe in freedom of expression, this speech is a must.

And of course there's one last outrageous twist to the story. On 25 February 2015, the German legal system heaped shame upon itself once more by sentencing Sylvia Stolz to twenty months in prison* for "racial incitation" on the basis of what she says in this video ....

*This was in addition to the three years and three months they had already given Stolz for insisting on defending civil rights activist, Ernst Zundel, properly in court some years earlier."

Hamilton: UNBF Controversy Reveals Campus Speech issues

On Tuesday, January 16th the Brunswickan reported the findings of the above posters around the UNB Fredericton campus. The posters which first appeared to be distributed anonymously were credited to the National Socialist Canadian Labour Revival Party (NSCLRP) after an email was sent to the editor of theBrunswickan by an unnamed representative claiming leadership of the organization and taking responsibility for the distribution of the posters.

An investigation by the Brunswickan into the NSCLRP revealed its emergence on social media in late August 2017 and provided that the organization has since gained a small following by way of Facebook and a corresponding blog. By posting these flyers, the NSCLRP made a strong political standpoint opposing many left wing ideologies which has left several scholars and students outraged.

The poster implores it`s audience to “reject the anti-white narrative being pushed in media and academia” this message is further emphasized by the request to reconsider the historical implications of the residential schools as well as making the claim that “Overwhelmingly, Native Americans are beneficiaries and not victims of the society built by Europeans”. The poster then goes on to say that an unspecified enemy of Canada wishes to “divide and conquer” the region and calls on the unison of Native Americans and Europeans against a foreign threat. It becomes difficult to decipher the intended message of the poster as it covers a varying degree of highly controversial subjects but the last line “…the threat posed by the foreign invasion of our lands” is directly opposing mass immigration in Canada.

The posters, labeled as being white supremacist, quickly incited controversy on campus social media, with students and the public asking the university to take immediate action. UNBF Campus Security began an investigation and the Fredericton Police force has also become involved. These posters were condemned instantly by the university due to the intolerance of hate speech on campus. The intended message of this poster was veiled by an indirect title (the opposition of mass immigration and the defense of the portrayal of European heritage in universities are separate issues), and a left wing rant opposing the historical perspective of residential schools and questioning their overall impact was regarded as extremely inappropriate and offensive. The poster calls for the unison of the “Europeans and Native Americans” to come together as Canadians against mass immigration.

There are many issues with the way this party has chosen to present their unpopular underdeveloped opposition here but the argument can certainly be made that the posters do not directly contain hate speech, nor are they distinctly exhibiting racism here. A more obvious display of hate speech took place in the response to these posters with presumptuous name-calling and labels being distributed carelessly and without penalty. Whether or not you agree or disagree with the ideas presented by this group of individuals, the reaction to them seems extreme, problematic and oppressive.  All viewpoints need to be held to an academic standard, especially in a university setting, and if this poster was deemed unsuitable in supporting this viewpoint than it needs to be condemned on the grounds that the argument being made was not effectively communicated, researched, or proven.

There is a very big difference (but a very thin line) between the rejection of an idea and the suppression of one. Identifying a double standard in academia is extremely important. Allowing hate to come from one side of a political spectrum is not okay. Hate speech in any argument is not ok and while the university may provide an echo-chamber of politically correct, scrubbed and censored ideas, the real world issues are not always black and white. Students must be empowered to make the decisions about what literature, ideological standpoints, and political propaganda they accept to consume. Conformity should never be based off of fear. We are here to for all of the information, we are here to be critical and debate the important issues.
